Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola will change his starting lineup for Saturday's Premier League match at Brentford, according to Goal.com. The Reds travel to the Gtech Community Stadium less than 72 hours after a 6-3 Champions League win over LASK in midweek, and face Villarreal in Europe the following Tuesday.
Iraola said the compressed calendar leaves him no choice but to spread minutes across his squad. Goal.com reports that the Spanish coach framed rotation as a necessity rather than a preference during this stretch of the season.
Why it matters
Liverpool are balancing two competitions at once, and the trip to West London sits between a high-scoring European night and another continental fixture. Iraola's willingness to shuffle his side could shape both results: fresher legs at Brentford, but also a less settled lineup against a home team managing its own fitness questions.
The fixture also marks another test of squad depth. With one midfielder suspended and three long-term absentees unavailable, Liverpool's ability to absorb changes without dropping their level is central to how the coming week unfolds.
Gravenberch suspended, three could return
Ryan Gravenberch will not feature at Brentford. The midfielder is serving a one-match domestic ban after being sent off in the defeat to Manchester City, Goal.com reports.
On the injury front, Iraola offered encouragement. Cody Gakpo, Alexander Isak and Dominik Szoboszlai all picked up problems during the international break and missed both the City game and the LASK win, but the coach said none of the three should be ruled out this time.
"We have to wait and see," Iraola said, per Goal.com. "I think it's still very early but the same way I said they are not available for the previous games, I leave the chance open this time, yes."
Federico Chiesa and Wataru Endo are also in contention after sitting out the midweek European fixture because of eligibility rules. Conor Bradley, Hugo Ekitike and Giovanni Leoni remain sidelined on a long-term basis.
Iraola: everyone will be needed
Iraola made clear that rotation is about survival across competitions, not a signal about any single opponent. He pointed to the midweek changes as evidence of how he intends to manage the load.
"In this period especially, when we are basically playing every three days – almost less than three days – you need more players," he said, according to Goal.com. "That's why we changed the team a little bit on Wednesday. We will need to change again at the weekend, we will need to change again when we face Villarreal in another three days."
He added that the entire group has to stay switched on. "We need everyone, we will need everyone in one moment or the other," he said. "Everyone has to be ready because we will need him probably."
Brentford assessing their own knocks
Brentford are dealing with fitness questions of their own. Goal.com reports that head coach Keith Andrews is monitoring Kevin Schade and Jannik Schuster, both of whom picked up knocks in a 2-2 draw at Aston Villa.
"Jannik and Kev have been on the grass this week and we'll see what tomorrow brings in terms of how much they can do," Andrews said.
Sepp van den Berg, a former Liverpool defender, along with Nathan Collins and Mikkel Damsgaard, are also nearing full fitness, per Goal.com.
Liverpool return to European action by hosting Villarreal on Tuesday, so Iraola's selections at Brentford will be watched closely for signs of how he plans to split his resources across the two games.
